What’s the big deal with Maca?
Grown in the mountains of Peru, maca root powder is sometimes called “Peruvian ginseng” or “Nature’s Viagra”. Traditional cultures consider it a magical symbol of youth and it has long been appreciated for its positive effects on energy levels, mental function, fertility and libido.
Maca is an adaptogen – a substance that exerts a beneficial influence on our hormones, thus helping our body adapt to any kind of stress.
Libido Boosting Effects
According to legend, Incan warriors would take maca before battles, which would give them enormous power. But after winning the battle they would not take it due to the strong effect on sex drive. Maca root powder is now becoming more popular not only because of its aphrodisiac properties, but because of its purported strengthening effects on the body, including boosting endurance, protecting the immune system and even improving cognitive fucntion. Due to this increasing demand, Peru plants more maca plants every year. Maca root powder is now widely available worldwide as a dietary supplement.
Uses
Best enjoyed in smoothies, but can be added to cereals, porridge, pancakes, chocolate, granola bars and energy balls. When you first start using maca, it’s best to begin by taking smaller amounts. Start with half a teaspoon daily and work up gradually to a maximum of 1 tablespoon daily.
Tip: I use it when I’m feeling tired and a bit rundown. 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, for 3 months. Love the taste too!
