EARTH DAY – LET’S HEAR IT 4 UNIVERSAL RESPONSIBILITY!
The Dalai Lama compares our planet to our house. We need to take care of it if we genuinely want happiness for our family, ourselves, our children, our friends and all the other creatures we share this great house with. If we think of our planet as our house, we automatically feel concern for our environment and understand that the future of humanity and of our planet are very much intertwined.
We’re all connected
Our children will inherit a vastly degraded planet if the destruction of the natural environment continues at the current rate. Buddhists regognise that human activities based on ignorance, greed and lack of respect for the earth’s living things are threatening life on earth as we know it. Their philosophy is based on simple living and individual responsibility – not indiscriminate consumption. Samdhong Rinproche defines it this way – “Every person has by nature certain duties or responsibilities to be performed, because each one of us constitutes some inseparable part of the universe”.
The ripple effect
These days we tend to talk about our rights and forget our responsibilities, overlooking the fact that one cannot exist without the other. Recognising that our actions have an influence that go far beyond our immediate circle makes us more responsible to ourselves, other living creatures and the environment. This is the essence of Universal Responsibility.
For now, we still have a rich and bountiful planet to sustain us. But for how much longer? Livestock production is just one major threat to the environment, due to global greenhouse emissions and massive deforestation. The planet can only continue to support us if we take care proper care of it. Fortunately, today we have access to more knowledge and ever-increasing global communications that make it possible to share this knowledge. It’s time for all of us to examine what we are responsible for and what we will pass on to future generations.
My motivation for becoming a nutritionist was a desire to have a positive impact on the well-being of everything in my immediate vicinity. It began with my family, quickly expanded to those coming to me for professional help with specific health issues and ultimately evolved to include being an advocate for environmentally friendly eating. Helping people resolve their health problems while making whole food, plant-based eating choices is a challenge that continues to be immensely satisfying, both personally and professionally.
Much at stake
While there’s no lack of information out there, much of it is confusing and inaccurate, which makes it difficult for many people to understand the effect their routine eating choices have not just on their own health, but on the environment. Foodwise.life helps separate fact from fiction by offering evidence-based nutritional and lifestyle advice that’s both relevant and practical for life in today’s world.
