Buckwheat Baby!
It’s not a grain and it’s got nothing to do with wheat.
Buckwheat is the seed of a leafy plant like rhubarb, first cultivated in China and the Himalayas over 1,000 years ago. Local populations depended on it for the essential nutrients, protein and fats needed to survive their difficult living conditions.
Nutrient Packed
Although not actually a grain, it’s used like one. But compared to traditional grains like wheat, rice and corn, buckwheat is far superior nutritionally. It has more protein and contains all 8 essential amino acids, including high amounts of lysine and arginine – in which the above grains are deficient, making it a great choice for vegetarians. It’s also high in tryptophan, the precursor to the feel-good hormone serotonin. Thus, it helps enhance mood and concentration. Buckwheat is also rich in rutin, a bioflavoid that detoxifies and helps strengthen your capillaries.
Steady Fuel
Buckwheat slow-release carbohydrate. Combined with natural simple carbs like fresh fruit, buckwheat becomes one of the best endurance fuels available. It also has a low glycaemic load, so it’s ideal for helping managing weight and sustaining our energy levels longer.
Full of Fibre
Aside with keeping our blood sugar levels stable, it’s also a great source of fibre, which binds to toxins and helps us eliminate, it’s rich in energy-producing B complex vitamins and it’s a source of antioxidants that quench inflammation.
Gluten Free
Finally, it’s gluten-free so those with celiac disease or anyone that wants to avoid gluten can enjoy it. And since buckwheat is gluten free, it’s considered more alkaline than gluten-containing grains.
It might have been around a while, but you can see why this modern-day super seed is becoming ever more popular!
