Dates are delicious – and there are plenty around right now. Whether you’re eating them straight out of the box or using them as a healthy natural sweetener in your festive desserts, here are a couple of tips.
Moderation!
Dates are super nutritious, but they’re also high in calories. One “normal” date is about 23 calories, but a big, juicy, Medjool date is about 66. Something to bear in mind if you’ve got an open box within reach!
Helps keep you regular
Dates have high levels of soluble fiber, which keep bowel movements regular by adding bulk to stool and helping it move faster through the intestines. Next time you’re looking for a natural constipation relief remedy, try having a few dates.
Natural Energy Booster
You won’t be surprised to learn that dates are higher in sugar than many other fruits. However, these natural sugars like fructose, glucose and sucrose are easily processed and utilized by the body for energy. Consuming a few dates before a workout or including them in a snack is an excellent idea when you’re looking for a healthy surge of energy. Try adding to a green smoothie as a healthy pick-me-up, instead of reaching for that afternoon cup of coffee!
Anti-inflammatory too
Dates are rich in magnesium – a mineral known for its anti-inflammatory benefit – and one that many people are deficient in. Studies have found that “inflammatory indicators in the body such as CRP (C-reactive protein), TNF (tumor necrosis factor alpha), and IL6 (interleukin 6) were all reduced when magnesium intake was increased.” So eating magnesium rich foods like dates can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other inflammation-related health ailments.
